چکیده

Professor Edward Ephraim O'Brien (“Ted”) has made lasting contributions to the theory and modeling of scalar mixing reaction in turbulent flows. With a doctoral dissertation at The Johns Hopkins University 1960, entitled “On Statistical Behavior Dilute Reactant Isotropic Turbulence,” supervised by legend Stanley Corrsin, company notable pioneer turbulence, John Leask Lumley, Ted's academic training propelled him through prolific career. In opening article this Special Issue, we provide review some contributions. First, summary is presented his work on examination failure cumulant discard approximation for mixing. This followed highlight impacts other spectral theories turbulence including Kraichnan's direct interaction approximation. His more modern theoretical/computational description reactive are discussed next, transported probability density function (pdf) formulation, scalar-gradient pdf transport equation, interfaces, filtered function. Finally, research Direct Numerical Simulation compressible reviewed.

Contributions of small scales to statistics of Hall MHD turbulence

A direct numerical simulation of decaying, homogeneous and isotropic turbulence of the incompressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic equations is carried out to clarify its statistical natures. Contributions of small scales to the statistics are examined. It is shown that the probability density function (PDF) of the enstrophy density is well characterized by the Gaussian distribution when the short ...

Transition to turbulence in particulate pipe flow.

We investigate experimentally the influence of suspended particles on the transition to turbulence. The particles are monodisperse and neutrally buoyant with the liquid. The role of the particles on the transition depends upon both the pipe to particle diameter ratios and the concentration. For large pipe-to-particle diameter ratios the transition is delayed while it is lowered for small ratios...

Controllability of flow turbulence.

In this paper, we study the controllability of real-world flow turbulence governed by the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, using strategies developed in chaos control. A case of control/synchronization of turbulent dynamics is observed when only one component of the velocity field vector is unidirectionally coupled to a target state, while the other component is uncoupled. Unlike previo...
